Vultures are a great, young band from Sheffield. They currently only have two songs out but within those two songs they have already proven that they have a wide array of talent, great drumming, guitar play and a unique voice to coincide with this it can only be a sure-fire way to the top for them. I recommend that you keep an eye on these guys in the future, and thankfully recently I had the chance to interview them, which is what I'm honoured to bring to you guys here:
Question. Who is your biggest musical inspiration, and why?
Vultures. Speaking for us all, I'd have to say our biggest inspiration as a collective is the music of Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground and, in more contemporary times, Arctic Monkeys. But also literature and cinema have a big influence on our stage shows and writing process. Books like: On the Road, HG Wells collection, 1984, Brave New World etc... influence us. And anything directed by David Lynch makes us tick.
Q. If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?
V. Alexandra Savior - She's mega.
Q. Which song do you wish you'd written and why?
V. Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan - it's the epitome of observational lyricism
Q. If you could swap careers with any other musician(s) who would it be?
V. U2
Q. The track Medusa has a very good drum beat, was that the basis for the track or was it something else?
V. Thanks! It's groovy ain't it. And no actually, the track started off as just two chords and a vibrato pedal!
Q. You've developed quite a following, I've seen quite a few people wearing Vultures T-Shirts. Is that a surreal experience?
V. It's encouraging to say the least. Kinda makes you wanna keep going when people show support!
Q. Medusa and When The Cats Come Home are both very different tracks, was that a conscious decision?
V. It wasn't actually! Just the writing process brought them out that way. I'd say you can tell both songs sound like us though.
Q. When you're in the studio do you have a pre-conceived idea what you're about to create or do you just let it flow?
V. A bit of both really, we rehearse pretty vigorously on the run up but in the walls of the studio we're constantly adding more ideas to a track, and it just sort of distorts and transforms into the finished product.
Q. You actively retweet and reply to your fans on Twitter, is that something you want to try to maintain as you grow bigger?
V. Yeah, most of our fans are our friends too, it helps take the edge off when performing/releasing that way.
Q. You often encourage people to go listen to other bands you recommend, do you think there's a sense of brotherhood missing from the music scene?
V. It depends really, there's definitely a national scene going through with This Feeling, Scruff of the Neck etc. A really high calibre array of bands are around at the moment.
Q. Finally, what's next for the band and when can we expect more music?
V. We've got a single out in June. Keep your eyes peeled.
