Future - High Off Life (Album Review)

Trapper and auto-tune king Future is one of the rare artists from the mumble rap generation that I vibe with. Mainly due to his ear for beats being almost flawless, and even his worst projects having some really great songs. Depending on which projects you count as traditional 'album' formats then this somewhere between his 3rd and 15th album. Ever since his DS2 project he has been steadily releasing music like there's no tomorrow, ensuring that he never leaves those Spotify playlists.

And it's that mentality that will ultimately kill the legacies of rappers today. We have a group of immensely talented wordsmiths and pop-rappers who have broken into the mainstream big time and are releasing 22 track projects that are well over an hour and barely switch gears throughout. 'High Off Life' is exhilarating at first with Future's iconic tuned vocals alongside some excellent production providing some undoubted club bangers. However, after an hour it really, really, really starts to grate.

The repetitive verses, heavy beats and 808's really bang at first, and led me into believing this may be one of the great rap records of 2020. Ultimately, the longevity of the record kills any hype and with 5 tracks to go you're pleading for this to end as they begin to merge into one. 2 10-track albums made form the songs on this record would be 2 fantastic trap albums that would be worth your time, but giving 'High Off Life' a miss means not losing 1/17 of the day to one Future album.
