Spilt Milk Society were a band originally made up of members from Birmingham, with the phenomenally talented Harry Handford at the helm. After the departure of the majority of the band to pursue other projects Spilly Milk took a little break. And now they're back, helming their attack on indie rock from the shores of Liverpool now. You may know them from blinding tune ssuch as Amsterdam, She Tastes Like Summer and Voices - tunes that made me fall in love with the band and converted my girlfriend into a Spiller (Can we call ourselves that? Spilt Milkers? Sounds wrong. Societers? Sounds formal, and it's not a word).
And here we are. October 2018 sees the return of one of the most exciting bands to come from the underground in years, with their new tune "Turtleneck Boy" a departure from their very indie sound with their bopping guitars to a poppier tune which takes on the life and times of a hipster. Talking about "Wearing coats in the summer" and a "charity shop can make me smile" - it's a light hearted tune in comparison to their previous ones and it's nice to see them moving into new territories.
The production of "Turtleneck Boy" is on another level to their previous songs, and whilst I've always loved rawness and imperfections in music, it's great to see Spilly Milk with genuine production. Not to mention, Harry Handford's vocals are also a different calibre now, holding notes much longer than he used to and sounding, almost, like a different person. Which is bittersweet for me in some ways because I thoroughly enjoyed his voice as it was, but "Turtleneck Boy" is such an incredible achievement for a band that have everything stacked against them for a few years and it's beautiful.
