COAX - Holding On (EP Review)

Andy Muscat from COAX recently contacted me on Twitter to listen to his bands debut EP, Holding On. If you submit your music then I will listen to it, no matter what. However, every now and then a band will catch my eye and I will see the invigorating potential that they have. I've seen it with acts such as Tiny Hueman, Proserpine, Craig Olson and more. COAX are one to be added to that list because after taking a listen to their music I could see the potential for something special. I'm not insinuating that COAX's Holding On is perfect, because it isn't. But then what even is perfect anyway? I digress. There are some mastering problems with the album, but that is absolutely to be expected with unsigned bands, and it can't be helped. The opening track to the EP, Over It, is by far and away the best track on this very short EP. It reminds of a mix between The Hunna and Kovic whom are both absolutely brilliant in their own right. PMMR's Corner: What The Hell Was Prog Rock Anyway?!

I get really fed up with people talking of a golden age of music and saying that todays music is not a patch on the old stuff. Let’s break this down a bit shall we. Firstly, today's music scene is better than ever. The big corporations no longer have a say on what will be released, anyone with a computer and some talent can make some music. Also, the BBC can no longer pick the records we hear. There are literally hundreds of sources to listen to music, gone are the days when a ‘committee’ would sit down and decide what would be broadcast! I cannot believe this even existed! I often wonder how many potentially talented artists gave up because of this draconian and weird process. Not anymore! Live venues are more accessible than ever, merch is now easily made as is CD’s, vinyl, cassettes etc. I still cannot believe that a bloody committee used to sit down and decide what we listened to! Jessie Reyez - Kiddo (EP Review)

Toronto Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jessie Reyez has burst onto the scene ever since her single Figures was featured on Zane Lowe's radio show. She's previously worked with Skrillex and Chance The Rapper which are both thoroughly evident on this project right here. Her Colombian father also saw fame as a guitarist, and Jessie claims that this is the biggest inspiration for her getting into music. Kiddo is her debut release, short enough to be an EP but long enough to be an album, even though it is only 19 minutes long there are 7 tracks and one of which features only her mother talking on the phone, therefore 6 tracks is an EP I suppose. The album opens with Fuck It, this is a great debut to the EP because it really showcases the strength of her vocals, and also her songwriting skills. There is a really smooth beat on offer here, which only kicks in as she shouts Fuck It at the start of the chorus. I'm not a big fan of the talking in the intro, it's just a tad c...

The Charlatans - Different Days (Review)

Long-standing Britpop outfit The Charlatans are back with their 13th album, many artists don't make it this far, very few even break the 10 album barrier. However, Different Days is probably their best album in nearly 20 years. Lead vocalist, Tim Burgess, is widely known for being able to actually sing very well, compared to the other singer's in Britpop's elite this is actually an achievement, but that was never the appeal of Britpop. Burgess can really ride a groove on this album, seamlessly flowing over the tracks, very smoothly. Immediately on the first track, Hey Sunrise, you would suspect this was a different band though because the lower tone of his voice and the slow, melodic harmony of the acoustic guitar is very un-Charlatans. The real winner on this album though is the song Not Forgotten, an eery 90's throwback to the days where the only thing to talk about in music was Blur v Oasis and Kate Moss was everywhere.
